PRESS RELEASE: During the 13th General Assembly of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), from 16-19 July 2018 in Utqiaġvik, Alaska, the Inuit of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka made the Utqiaġvik Declaration. The text includes a call to end the use of heavy fuel oil for shipping in Arctic waters:
“The following actions are needed to support food security in Inuit Nunaat:… “Direct ICC to advocate for the enforcement of the International Marine Organization Polar Code, other international and national regulations, advance emergency response, and phase out heavy fuel oil (HFO) in order to minimize impacts on marine mammals and fish and to prevent disruption of seasonal hunting, and for safety and environmental protection.”
