Press Release: PowerCell and Siemens to present plans for fuel cell based maritime systems at Hamburg SMM trade fair

PRESS RELEASE: PowerCell Sweden AB (publ) will be joining Siemens AG in their booth at the international maritime trade fair SMM in Hamburg, Germany Sept 4-7.

PowerCell and Siemens will present their recently announced cooperation and their plans for a joint development of fuel cell-based drive and power generating systems for maritime applications.

The recently announced cooperation was formalized on August 14th when the Swedish and German company signed a memorandum of understanding in Hamburg. The aim of the cooperation is to jointly develop a fuel cell-based drive and power generating system for marine applications. Fuel cell-based drive and power systems could greatly reduce the dependency on fossil fuels in the commercial shipping industry. The International Maritime Organization, IMO, has set a target to reduce the emissions from commercial shipping with 50 percent by 2050, which will require a substantial decrease in the use of fossil fuels.

PowerCell is a world-leading developer and manufacturer of fuel cell stacks and fuel cell systems. PowerCell’s technology and products have several benefits for the Maritime segment which will be utilized in the collaboration with Siemens. Among them are market leading power density, PowerCell’s plug and play solutions and PowerCell’s commitment to Safety features.

In June a power generating system based on fuel cell stacks from PowerCell got the first ever approval in principle for use in maritime vessels by DNV GL, a global quality assurance and risk management company.
