During the UK Chamber of Shipping’s Summit, held September 20, 2016, Carnival Corporation & PLC highlighted the importance of proactivity and transparency in achieving energy efficiency improvements.
Carnival Corporation’s Senior Vice President Maritime Affairs, Tom Strang, stated that there have been challenges for the industry but now it is time for proactivity and transparency more than anything. In order for energy efficiency to improve, investment into other technologies and strategies is key, and demonstrating to other industry members the results of energy efficiency modifications is vital.
Despite Carnival’s 10% growth in capacity since 2011, it has reduced its carbon footprint by 6% by investing heavily, around £150 million in 2015, in not just technologies but energy efficiency training. Designing ships with greater efficiency and taking on more efficient ways of operating, the cruise line has been able to achieve such results. Having an open view of the various ways of operation that are possible and looking into alternative methods and fuels is also part of the transparency that is required to enhance operational efficiency and save fuel and reduce emissions.
In particular, the company has taken an interest in LNG and has considered biofuel but more infrastructure is needed. Biogas for the future may be possible but it needs to be more available. At the moment this is a challenge, which “cannot be taken alone.” We need to work with land based technologies to build new maritime technologies and systems and explore different fuels and strategies, Mr Strang stated. Each sector or organisation needs a system or a strategy that works for them. It is no use being forced into a system that is not suitable and today we need to make decisions that will be good for us in the future, he emphasised.
