GustoMSC has released a report that looks at the use of liquefied natural gas for mobile offshore units, such as construction vessels, drillships, jack-ups and semisubmersibles, and how the fuel may be used in these units for regulatory compliance.
- Such offshore marine units often operate in Emission Control Areas where the sulphur content is limited to a maximum of 0.1%.
- Report says that LNG is feasible as a marine fuel for these units but needs technical, operational and economic aspects to be considered at an early stage.
- Dynamically positioned vessels and semi-submersible showed the highest potential for fuel cost savings. Offshore wind installation was identified as a promising market for implementation of LNG as a fuel.
