Scandlines has christened its newest hybrid ferry, the M/V Copenhagen, which is hailed to be one of the most environmentally efficient ferries of today.
The M/V Copenhagen features a low emission and fuel saving diesel electric hybrid propulsion system, the Corvus Energy Storage System (ESS). The ferry also uses an optimised propulsion system that consists of propellers and two thrusters, which can be rotated 360 degrees and used in narrow waterways or during manoeuvres in port.
Four scrubbers are also fitted to the vessel to reduce emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx) from the exhaust gas.
Energy is further saved through other measures such as through the use of LED lighting and variable frequency controls to optimise energy use. When consumption is lower, excess energy is stored in the Corvus ESS. This energy is then released when consumption is higher than generator production.
The ferry will join its sister ship, the M/V Berlin, to service the crossing between Rostock, Germany and Gedser, Denmark.
The vessel is the sixth Scandlines hybrid ferry to use Corvus’s ESS.
