Scandlines’ New Battery-Powered Ferry Named “M/V Copenhagen”

The latest addition to the world’s largest fleet of hybrid ferries owned and operated by Danish clean technology enthusiasts Scandlines has been officially named the M/V Copenhagen.

This ferry is the sixth Scandline vessel to be equipped with a Corvus Energy’s Lithium Ion ESS (Energy Storage System) for low-emission, fuel-saving diesel electric hybrid propulsion system. The main engines provide an output of 18,000kW, with a further 4,500kW available from the Corvus ESS.

The vessel’s optimised propulsion system consists of propellers and two thrusters, which can be rotated through 360 degrees and are used in narrow waterways or during manoeuvres in port. The ferry also hosts four scrubbers for the abatement of sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter.

Soon the M/V Copenhagen will join its sister ship M/V Berlin in servicing the crossing between Rostock, Germany and Gedser, Denmark.

At 169.5m in length and having a width of 25.4m, this new vessel has capacity for 460 cars or 96 transport trucks, and 1,300 passengers.
