Ship Owners Urged to Upgrade to New Digital Chart Standards

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has called upon ship owners to upgrade to the latest ECDIS software standards.

The UKHO has encouraged ship owners to take advantage of the new ECDIS standards before the deadline of August 31, 2017, as upgrade requirements may vary from ship to ship. The UKHO is working with manufacturers to enable users to experience the latest up-to-date software standards, whilst ECDIS manufacturers are working to achieve type-approval for their software.

There has been some question from ship owners regarding the compatibility of the new ECDIS standards against newly produced ENCs and the current Presentation Library edition 3.4, however, the ENCs are not changing and the upgrade is only to the Presentation Library, which governs how the ENC data is displayed on the ECDIS screen, not the data itself.
