Shipping could be responsible for 17% of global CO2 emissions in 2050 if left unregulated, according to a new study released this month by the European Parliament.
The study took into account the IMO’s own research, which found that shipping GHG emissions are up by 70% since 1990 and are likely to grow by a further 250% by 2050.
The study also indicated that almost 40% of CO2 emissions in 2050 will be related to shipping and aviation if left unregulated.
Shipping currently accounts for nearly 3% of global CO2emissions, higher than those of Canada, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, France, or the United Kingdom, and a pledge has been made by all these countries to cut their emissions ahead of next month’s talks.
