Singapore Hosts New Maritime Research Lab

A new marine research lab has been opened this week in Singapore to help look at ways the shipping industry can increase eco-efficiency and cut costs of its operations.

Researchers at the Sembcorop Marine Lab at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) will look to ascertain how best ships can be retrofitted with technologies so that they can use both diesel fuel and cleaner fuel at the same time in order to increase efficiency.  The lab will also aim to develop solutions in fuel emission management and energy efficiency.

The lab features the region’s first dual-fuel marine engine, which can burn both marine diesel oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the same time. The engine, which was funded by the Economic Development Board will be used to study how fuel combustion efficiency can be improved and look at ways ship owners can reduce their costs while making shipping greener.

Researchers from the lab will also work with industry partners and government agencies, such as the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on a range of maritime related research projects.

The lab was officially opened by Mr Wong Weng Sun, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sembcorp Marine on Wednesday December 7. Sembcorp Marine has contributed SGD $10 million to fund the lab.
