SK Shipping LNG Carrier Newbuilds to Feature Highly Efficient Propulsion System

Korean ship owner SK Shipping has ordered two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) that will feature French LNG containment specialist’s GTT Mark III Flex membrane technology that will enable increased performance of the vessels while using a highly efficient propulsion system.

The orthogonal corrugation pattern of the GTT Mark III Flex membrane allows it to accommodate any thermal or hull deflection stresses and to work under the fatigue limit to increase its lifetime.  Furthermore, the low thermal conductivity of the foam and of the corners results in a thin insulation, which maximises the cargo capacity and has proven performance on LNG carriers.

The ships will built at Hyundai’s shipyard in Ulsan, Korea and will be operated by BW Group.  The vessels are scheduled to be delivered in 2019.
