Stena Line is to add at least four new LNG-powered RoPax vessels to its fleet.
The company has claimed that the ferries recently ordered will be the most ‘fuel efficient ferries in the world’, setting new industry standards for operational performance, emissions and cost competitiveness.
The newbuilds will be constructed by the AVIC Shipyard in China, will be 50% larger than today’s standard RoPax vessels. The main engines will be powered by either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or methanol and will be used within Stena Line’s route network in northern Europe.
The contract that has been signed, subject to Board approval at the end of April, also includes the option for another four vessels.
The first ferries are expected to be delivered during 2019 and 2020.
