Rolls Royce remains bullish on autonomous ships within decade

In a recent article, the Vice President of Innovation, Engineering, and Technology, Marine at Rolls Royce, Mr Oskar Levander, claims industry can expect autonomous ships routinely navigating global waters within the decade.

  • It is not ‘if’, but ‘when’ they will happen, states Levander.
  • Rolls Royce anticipates first autonomous vessels will be harbour tugs or car-ferrys designed for short distances.
  • Benefits of unmanned ships include reduced onboard fatigue, reduced risks of attacks, lower accommodation spend, larger cargo capacity and lower wind resistance.
