Terntank Gets First LNG Bunkering Incentive from Port Of Rotterdam

Terntank has received the first Rotterdam liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering incentive for its new product tanker, amounting to a discount of 10% on seaport dues.

Terntank’s Ternsund vessel arrived in Rotterdam on Sunday August 7th to unload naphtha and gas oil at Vopak in the Botlek.  The following day the ship was moved to the ECT terminal at the Willem Alexanderhaven where the LNG bunkering will take place and is expected to be completed on Wednesday morning.

The incentives awarded by the Port of Rotterdam aim to turn the port into a major European LNG bunkering hub and decrease the use of standard oil that is less clean than LNG.  By encouraging the use of LNG the port expects to reduce emissions of CO2 by up to 20% and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 85%.  Both sulphur and particulate matter can be reduced to almost zero with the use of LNG as marine fuel.

As well as these incentives the port also provides LNG at 20% lower cost than elsewhere.  Next year, the Port Authority is to welcome a new bunker vessel which Shell will use to supply sea-going vessels with LNG from the water.
