The Sustainable Ship Operator 2015 – What Happened Next?

In 2015 an international audience of industry experts and innovators gathered for the Ship Efficiency Awards 2015 and celebrated Terntank A/S being named as the Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year.

The Swedish LNG-Powered tanker pioneers won the highly coveted award for their product tanker M/T Ternvag. This tanker was the most sustainable vessel to dock in Rotterdam in 2014 according to the Environmental Ship Index (ESI). The vessel is equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for NOx abatement. At the beginning of 2015, M/T Ternvag was fitted with a frequency Converter enabling the vessel to further increase fuel savings when slow steaming.

Upon receiving the award, Terntank’s Managing Director, Jens Buchhave said: “We are delighted that we have received this accolade for M/T Ternvag as recognition for our efforts in the areas of energy efficiency, environmental protection and sustainability. We will continue to provide the utmost quality of service to our customers and ensure we maintain the highest standards of sustainability and environmental care.”

In the run up to the Ship Efficiency awards 2016, this feature examines what Terntank did next following their award win at the Ship Efficiency Awards 2015.

This year Terntank’s tanker M/T Ternsund, employed with Winterthur Gas & Diesel’s (WinGD) low-pressure X-DF gas admission technology, successfully finished its sea trials marking the move of the first dual-fuel two-stroke engine employing X-DF from technical concept to commercial operation.

The 15,000 DWT tanker features a Wärtsilä RT-flex50DF engine that uses the X-DF technology installed as the main engine to drive a single propeller.

The sea trials, which were undertaken from May 22 – 28,2016 saw the Wärtsilä engine run continuously for several days in gas mode with a series of automated changeovers from diesel mode to gas mode and back.  The engine was also run at a range of load points in gas and diesel mode to exploit the sea margin of the M/T Ternsund following a new hull that has not been impacted by fouling.

The engine and the X-DF technology enable the ship’s compliance with nitrogen oxides (NOx) ECAs to Tier III limits in gas operation without the need for additional exhaust gas after treatment.

The solution is the result of the “Into the Future – Baltic SO2ultion” project that aims to drive cooperation between Terntank, Wärtsilä, WinGD, fuel & bio products supplier North European Oil Trade (NEOT) and energy & environmental consultant Wega Enviro. This European Union co-funded product promotes more environmentally friendly ways of shipping in the Baltic and encourages more efficient shipping.

Terntank took delivery of M/T Ternsund on the June 27, 2016 from the yard Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Co., Ltd in China. The vessel left the Chinese shipyard destined for Singapore, where she loaded cargo bound for Europe.

When the LNG powered product tanker arrives for the first time to the European sea port where it will be celebrated in the Port of Rotterdam on August 8, 2016.

Terntank has ordered a total of four LNG-powered tankers from the Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding shipyard. The company said that they chose to build a further two LNG-fuelled vessels in addition to the original order because they believe there is a market for energy-efficient and environmentally adapted tankers.

The fourth tanker is due to be delivered in 2017.

Two of the tankers will be on a time charter with North European Oil Trade Oy (NEOT) in Finland.

NEOT Manager – Chartering, Satu Mattila, commended Terntank’s role as a sustainable operator and an LNG technology pioneer: “We believe that Terntank is a quality company that will be the first shipping company that will introduce innovative LNG technology.”

Mattila explained that the company has set a number of specific requirements that the Terntank vessels must comply with: “We have technical requirements for the vessels, such as very good ice capability and operational efficiency, but these requirements also concern the fact the NEOT is working to reduce the environmental impact of oil products within the distribution chain by utilising new and energy efficient technology to reduce current emission levels in the Baltic Sea’s emission control area.”
