Tidal Currents Model Added to Ship Performance System

MeteoGroup has developed and integrated its own in-house tidal currents model into its Ship Performance Optimisation System (SPOS) Onboard and RouteGuard services to improve situational awareness and estimated time of arrival (ETA) planning.

The tidal currents model has been integrated with the existing ocean current data, helping to calculate the impact on vessel speed and direction. The high resolution model has proven its accuracy following testing against observations and local institute models.

Combining both ocean and tidal currents provides ships with the ability to plan their voyages in more realistic situations, improve safety and manage costs more efficiently. This new integrated tidal currents software represents ocean current conditions over the continental shelf, where tidal currents are extremely important to a ship’s stability.

Non-tidal ocean current data in SPOS and RouteGuard has also been upgraded, now offering updates every two hours, compared to previous once-daily updates.

René Snoek, Master Mariner and Team Leader, Shipping at MeteoGroup commented: “Captains on board and our Master Mariners and Route Analysts will be able to define even more accurately the optimum speed and consumption of a vessel’s voyage. This is a leap forward in assisting Captains, owners and charterers in complying with SEEMP.”
