Tonnage Requirements For Ballast Water Convention Not Met, Says IMO

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has confirmed that the tonnage requirements for the Ballast Water Management Convention to enter into force have not been reached following a spate of ratifications in late 2015.

The IMO announced on January 15, 2016 that following their review of global shipping tonnage, the recent ratifications of the Ballast Water Convention by Morocco, Finland and Indonesia have not surmounted to sufficient tonnage to trigger the entry into force of the Convention.

Forty-seven countries have now ratified the convention, substantially more than the 30 required, but their combined fleets comprise, at most, 34.56 per cent of global tonnage, with 35 per cent required for entry into force.

Although the IMO have confirmed that process is not yet complete, and will continue for up to three more weeks, they say that they are in a position to confirm that the November ratifications did not trigger the convention’s entry into force.
