Torghatten Trafikkselskap is to install ABB’s Onboard DC Grid power system to its hybrid ferry.
The ferry will run as a hybrid but will also be able to function on electric power with charging available at the shore.
ABB’s Onboard DC Grid system makes use of direct current to connect energy sources with consumers. The modular electrical system platform integration of energy storage, permitting the engines of ships to operate more efficiently at variable speeds to create significant energy savings.
The ferry’s generators will work at their optimum levels by utilising the batteries to help meet the power demand.
Torghatten Trafikkselskap has stated that the company has the option of adding another sixteen battery packs and a shore connection in order to operate the vessel fully electric.
ABB’s Onboard DC Grid power system is part of the total electric system which is being supplied by Acel. The hybrid ferry is to be designed by Multi Maritime and built by Fiskarstrand Verft in western Norway. One built the hybrid ferry will operate along one of Norway’s passenger ferry routes.
