TOTE Maritime Adds Second LNG-Powered Container Ship To Fleet

TOTE Maritime has taken delivery of the world’s second liquefied natural gas (LNG) container ship, which is due to enter into trade next month.

The Perla Del Caribe was built and delivered by General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, and is expected to contribute towards cost-effective and environmentally-friendly shipping.  LNG ships facilitate low nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions and increase fuel efficiency when compared to conventionally powered ships.

The Marlin Class container ship is part of a two-ship contract signed in December 2012. These ships are to be the largest dry cargo ships powered by LNG and the cleanest cargo-carrying ships in the world.

The ship was delivered two months ahead of schedule and is the sister ship of the world’s first LNG-powered container ship, the Isla Bella.
