TPI Megaline Equips Mega Caravan Vessel with ABB OCTOPUS Software

Korean heavy lift company, TPI Megaline has chosen to use ABB’s predictive OCTOPUS marine software to improve the safety and efficiency of operations of one of their mega caravan vessels.

This type of mighty ship is semi-submersible and is typically used to transport over-sized cargoes such as oil rigs and drill ships.

ABB say that the OCTOPUS software will assist the ship’s officers so the vessel is not subject to dynamic weather and accelerations.

In order to offer such assistance, ship parameters plus load information will be loaded into the software and combined with weather forecasts to calculate accurate motion forecasts.

The software allows both the ship owner and cargo owner to use real-time tracking of the vessel motions from any location in the world thanks to three-sensor motion measurement that beam real time information to the shore. The ship’s journey can also be monitored via ABB’s Fleet Portal.

This isn’t TPI’s first application of the OCTOPUS software, in 2014 they installed hydrodynamic analysis software in order to perform seakeeping calculations for heavy cargo transportations before departure.
