CEO of Transas, Frank Coles, has delivered a presentation at the 2017 SMART4SEA Conference & Awards on the smart connected ship, big data and cybersecurity.
- Coles says that there are many elements of shipping and that it is important not to generalise, especially when considering the impacts of digitalisation.
- Before considering unmanned ships, a workable ecosystem and connecting and acceptable cyber security is vital says Coles.
- At the current time, Coles believes the ecosystem is dysfunctional, where the link between ship and shore adds pressure to the ship and crew, it does not add value.
- Connectivity is critical to unmanned ships and at the moment we are nowhere near the required level of capability for this to occur, he states.
- He also reiterates that humans are the biggest danger, giving them more access leads to higher risk.
