Transas CEO talks connectivity, big data and cybersecurity

Coles says that there are many elements of shipping and that it is important not to generalise, especially when considering the impacts of digitalisation.
Before considering unmanned ships, a workable ecosystem and connecting and acceptable cyber security is vital says Coles.
At the current time, Coles believes the ecosystem is dysfunctional, where the link between ship and shore adds pressure to the ship and crew, it does not add value.
Connectivity is critical to unmanned ships and at the moment we are nowhere near the required level of capability for this to occur, he states.
He also reiterates that humans are the biggest danger, giving them more access leads to higher risk.
