The Tsakos Group of Companies has selected DNV GL to help prepare a cybersecurity management system for its fleet and onshore facilities, marking the first management system developed by a shipping company in cooperation with DNV GL’s Advisory Services.
Putting this kind of cybersecurity service into practise for the first time, DNV GL will help the Greek shipping company to implement a comprehensive system of safeguards and procedures to ensure full protection against the growing threat of cybersecurity.
In order to help the Tsakos Group’s charters and customers to feel that their systems are secure and to enhance the competitiveness of their assets, the highest levels of cybersecurity protection will be integrated on-board and onshore. DNV GL will help the Tsakos Group to manage risks using a systematic and integrated approach that covers all levels of asset management and their interconnections from infrastructure technology and software, to human-system interaction, data management and company-wise policy and preparedness.
The companies have been working together to produce an information security management system which will provide a comprehensive framework for assessing cyber vulnerabilities and implementing the necessary measures for mitigating risks and responding to potential system breaches. The resilience of the procedures and management system will then be verified through penetration testing carried out by the DNV GL Group company Marine Cybernetics.
This decision comes following guidelines published by the Round Table of international shipping that recommends for shipping companies to develop a cybersecurity management system to ensure that they not only have a broad overview of the cyber and information security risks which may occur during their assets’ lifecycles, but also maintain sustainable and resilient procedures to protect vessels and their systems against cyber threats.
