Underwater Repair Keeps Ship’s Schedule on Track

A class approved permanent underwater insert repair was recently carried out on a RoRo vessel in Palm Beach, Florida, allowing the ship owner to keep his vessel’s operation schedule on track.

Hydrex Underwater Technology divers made repairs to the vessel that suffered corrosion damage to the aft starboard side shell plating.  They installed a cofferdam over the waterside of the affected area and fitted a new insert plate that was welded following the Hydrex class-approved procedure.

Following this an independent inspector carried out ultrasonic testing and the repair was approved by the classification surveyor who was present during the operation.

The divers also carried out a full inspection of the underwater hull of the vessel as well as cleaning its two propellers. Combining several jobs at once enabled the entire operation to be carried out in a time efficient and cost effective manner as only one mobilisation needed to be planned.
