RSC Bio Solutions has launched a first-of-its-kind maritime environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL) at this year’s SMM trade fair held in Hamburg, Germany.
The EAL, FUTERRA, is the first-of-its kind to be released into the market and is the only hydrocarbon EAL that is made from renewable plant-based material rather than traditionally ester-based. The product meets all global regulations, including the United States Vessel General Permit (VGP) and is Ecolabel-certified, enabling its use anywhere in the world.
When designing the lubricant, RSC Bio Solutions stated that flexibility for ship owners and operators was the key driver to allow fleets to go anywhere in the world and redeploy their assets. The EAL was therefore developed with a high range of viscosities and can be used as a direct drop-in replacement for mineral oil or petroleum-based lubricants seal compatibility.
The EAL can be used in both wet and dry environments and can tolerate extreme condition changes, including temperature variations to increase its life and require fewer change-outs. Its lifetime of 3-4 times that of traditional EALs permits these long interval periods between change-outs. RSC Bio Solutions has worked alongside a number of OEMs, including Wärtsilä and Rolls-Royce, and has obtained a number of OEM approvals for its FUTERRA.
Mike Guggenheimer, president and CEO, RSC Bio Solutions commented: “FUTERRA is the clear choice for risk mitigation in sensitive areas without sacrificing performance, quality or cost-effectiveness. We believe that forward-looking and operationally efficient ship management teams will be keenly interested in this new technology as they anticipate future trends.
