USCG Launches Voluntary Fuel Sampling Program

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has launched a voluntary fuel sampling program to help determine industry compliance with pollution regulations governed under MARPOL Annex VI.

The voluntary fuel sampling program will begin on February 29, 2016.

From this date, US Port State Control officers may request fuel samples from ships when carrying out examinations and may use sampling or testing assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency.

All requests will be voluntary and the ship will not receive sanctions if the samples are not compliant. However, the USCG may notify the Administration of where the non-compliant fuel was purchased.
