Alfa Laval’s PureBallast ballast water management system (BWMS) is currently undergoing the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) latest type approval method of testing, which will enable a new USCG type approval to be awarded if the system meets the requirements.
This latest technique for testing for type approval uses the 5‑chloromethylfluorescein diacetate (CMFDA) staining method, which comes following the USCG’s decision not to accept the most profitable number method (MPN) as a way of approving BWMS. This means that previous UV systems that obtained type approval using the MPN method, such as PureBallast, are nulled and will have to undergo further testing using the CMFDA method to obtain type approval.
However, this decision does not affect those systems which obtained type approval not using the MPN method.
Alfa Laval’s system has received Alternative Management Acceptance (AMS) by the USCG, which will not be affected. PureBallast is now well underway in its testing using the CMFDA testing method and is expected to submit a new application following its completion in Q2 of 2016.
The testing of PureBallast is expected to be completed during Q2 of 2016.
