Wärtsilä and CSSC Sign Agreement for BWMS

Wärtsilä has signed a manufacturing license agreement with Jiujiang Precision Measuring Technology Research Institute, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). In a nutshell:

  • The 6-year agreement will give CSSC access to technology and the rights to manufacture Wärtsilä’s Aquarius ballast water treatment system for CSSC newbuildings and retrofit projects.
  • CSSC’s new manufacturing facility will be opened up to Wärtsilä to facilitate support supply and demand for the BWMS direct to Wärtsilä customers.
  • The modular BWMS uses electrochlorination technology to treat ballast water.
  • Wärtsilä is seeking Type Approval from the United States Coast Guard for its BWMS. It currently holds USCG Alternate Management Acceptance certification and IMO Type Approval.
  • The agreement comes a year before the entry into force of the Ballast Water Management Convention on September 8, 2017, which will require approximately 30,000[1] BWMS retrofits.
