Wastewater management should be addressed in the early stages of ship design according to Mark Beavis, Managing Director of ACO Marine.
- Wastewater systems are an essential kit and overload or breakdown could result in huge pollution and environmental breaches, fines and even criminal proceedings against the crew.
- Yet in reality management of wastewater is an afterthought for naval architects said Beavis during a Royal Institution of Naval Architects conference in Italy.
- Systems are still found to not meet existing standards due to improper use of detergent, ack of maintenance, or failure of operators to follow operating instructions Beavis said.
