Nor-Shipping: Wearable technology in shipping is a must

Wearable technology is the next logical step in the digital transformation, says Julie Pray, Senior Engineer, Human Factors, at ABS.

ABS believes it is the answer to remotely support operations without losing the human element.

It allows the right visual information to be given to the right person, at the right time, and more efficiently, which according to Pray, is vital in this digital revolution.

Computing and connectivity needs have changed over time, moving from computers to laptops, tablets and smart phones.  The next step is a technology that can be worn and that generates and transfers images, replicating the exact picture that the recipient would get if they were present.

Demonstrating its remote support glasses at Nor-Shipping 2017, Oslo, ABS showed how efficient collaboration is possible by wearable technology. Shore based staff can support surveyors in the field, simply by seeing what they see through these glasses.

This is particularly relevant for engineers that do not have as much field experience, allowing them to see exactly what is going on in the field without physically being there.

Ultimately, wearable technology puts the tools in the right hands of those that need them now, believes Egil Legland, ABS Country Manager, Norway. It is part of the transition to a smarter future shipping industry.
