DISRUPTIVE sustainability is about creating new resource flows, systematically reducing waste and cost, while growing new markets, rethinking business models, and creating sustainable long term propagation according to Sofia Fürstenberg. She is the first project manager on disruptive sustainability at Nor-Shipping, the bi-annual Oslo maritime trade show that is set to be held this summer.
For a maritime business, disruptive sustainability means looking at the barriers to success and seeing how they have been overcome to create impact in the industry. What hurdles have been jumped, who partnered, how did collaboration occur, where did the money come from?
It is so important not to be fluffy and to be concrete, bringing visionary products and putting them down on the table so that everyone can have a good look at them. This will allow others to view ideas and visions that may shake up the maritime industry Fürstenberg said.
Some companies can often find it difficult to apply technology trends to their businesses. For example, with autonomous technologies and robotics there is often hesitancy in engaging in such new and uncertain areas. A business that takes the disruptive sustainability approach will be able to use these new technologies to create a vision and force that has real impact in the industry.
As part of this year’s Nor-Shipping event, a disruptive sustainability hall will be open to all. This will help to define disruptive sustainability in the ocean space. It will not simply host a display of technologies, but will help to tell a story, showing the industry what it takes to be a success.
The platform will help businesses to see how they can play a part in maritime clusters and how they can bring important change. It will give small start-up companies a chance to be entrepreneurial. It will not happen overnight said Fürstenberg, but it will provide additional ways to bring them more into the spotlight. Hall A will host the disruptive sustainability platform.
