Wightlink Ferries’ new hybrid ferry is to feature Corvus Energy’s lithium ion-based Energy Storage System (ESS).
The Orca ESS will function alongside other Wärtsilä products that have been chosen to make the ferry the most environmentally friendly vessel in the fleet, and the new flagship ferry for Wightlink.
The Orca ESS range includes Orca Energy and Orca Power. Orca Energy is particularly suitable for ferries and merchant vessels that require large amounts of energy, while Orca Power is more suited to applications that require a seamless response to dynamic power loads, such as offshore supply vessels and port equipment.
The ferry will enter into operation in 2018 and is destined to sail between the Isle of Wight (UK) and mainland UK.
