Hydrogen-powered vessel launched in France

A hydrogen-powered catamaran that will embark on a six-year around the world voyage to raise awareness of environmental issues has been launched.

Victorien Erussard, Offshore racer and Energy Observer Captain, says that the vessel will primarily use wind power and solar panels for energy.  When there is not enough wind or sun, the vessel will convert seawater to hydrogen for energy supply.

He says that this vessel is a symbol to show the rest of the world what can be done with such technologies. It is the first vessel to produce hydrogen onboard from sea water.

An intelligent traction kite will also be used on the vessel to pull it along using wind power and generate electricity through reversible electric waters.

The vessel will stop at over 100 locations during its voyage.

The Energy Observer was lowered into the sea on Friday April 14, in Saint Malo, France. It will set sail next month from Paris.
