World’s First Two-Stroke Low-Speed Triple Fuel Engine Destined for LEG Carriers

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) announced on 29 June that they have completed the world’s first ME-GIE ethane-operated two-stroke diesel engine.

The Mitsui-MAN B&W 7G50ME-C9.5-GIE is the first engine in the series of three for installation to liquefied ethylene gas (LEG) carriers owned by Ocean Yield, Norway and Hartmann Schiffahrt, Germany that are to be built at Sinopacific Offshore Engineering (SOE) in China.

The ME-GI engines use high-pressure gas injection to lower the formation of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) during combustion, while also reducing the likelihood of fuel slip to make it one of the most environmentally sound marine engines.

Ethane was chosen by the companies as the fuel source as it has a more competitive pricing and a short bunkering time and is a naturally occurring element in natural gas.

The ME-GI engines will also be able to run on methane if required to do so.
