Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) detailed the myriad of green projects underway that are driving their profile as a sustainability leader to delegates attending Ship Efficiency: The Event 2016.
Iver Iversen, Director New Technology and Regulatory Affairs, Wilh. Wilhelmsen Holding ASA spoke of the several projects that include slow steaming, continuous improvement on weather routing, voyage planning and waste heat recovery.
Energy optimisation is key for them, Iversen revealed, which is why they have become part of so many initiatives including the Trident Alliance and currently use no more than 0.1% sulphur content fuel at all ports. Furthermore, at the current time they are looking into the operational profile of paint schemes, ensuring that time is taken and decisions based on such schemes are not made with haste. The operational profile of the ship needs to meet the operational profile of the scheme, he said.
The expansion of the Panama Canal has also given them opportunity to modify ships, optimising the hull, engine and propeller and installing scrubbers to reduce sulphur oxides (SOx). Regulatory certainty is needed but at the moment we haven’t had it, such as with the Ballast Water Management Convention, Iversen stated.
