Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) has detailed its commitment to sustainable shipping and reducing environmental impact of its operations through its Sustainability Report 2015.
In the report the company demonstrates how it is actively working to reduce energy consumption and the use of natural resources.
WWL has achieved CO2 reductions of 20% per unit transported since 2005 and has more recently, in March 2016, introduced a new policy that aims to limit sulphur content in fuel at berth to less than 0.1%, using either Marine Gas Oil or sulphur oxides (SOx) reducing scrubbers.
WWL aims to decrease nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 20% at berth between 2015 and 2020 in tonnes, vessel and year, to be achieved by reducing turnaround time in port, fleet renewal and by introducing energy efficient and particularly NOx-reducing technology measures.
To prevent transfer of species from native to non-native environments, WWL is also planning on implementing the Clean and Capture approach across its entire fleet, which also helps to reduce CO2 emissions by eliminating hull fouling and friction.
Community engagement has been hailed as an important factor by WWL. By continuing to encourage home communities to participate in sustainable development and engaging with the global ocean community, WWL hope to further drive sustainable practises and low environmental impact shipping.
Furthermore, the sustainability report indicates that WWL is continuing to improve its reporting capabilities for land-based business. Increasing reporting from 24 in 2014 to 27 in 2015 resulted in a total emissions reduction of 15%.
