Scrubber Granted Authorisation For Zero Discharge By DNV GL

A scrubber system has been granted full authorisation for zero discharge, closed-loop operation by DNV GL following a test phase in late-2015 to early-2016 on the tanker MT Levana. 

DNV GL have issued official authorisation for the entire system.

Initially a pilot installation of the scrubber system on the same tanker was approved in late-2014 for the open-loop process by DNV GL following a one-year test phase.

The scrubber was then later converted for closed-loop operation along with necessary infrastructure.

It was the Bredo dock in Bremerhaven that converted tanks for storing caustic soda and the temporary storage of process water so that the MT Levana could carry out closed-loop operations.

“The pilot installation on the MT Levana allowed us to gain valuable experience for the series production, including a flexible 2-tower solution and improved measurement technology. The amortisation period of the systems depends on the navigation area and equipment as well as the operating situation. Despite the currently low fuel price, in many cases it is still well under three years,” said Nils Homburg, Manager Exhaust Gas Cleaning Department at SAACKE.

The SAAKE scrubber is designed for both new ship constructions as well as for retrofits.

The MT Levana is operated by Carl Büttner GmbH & Co. KG.
