KVH Videotel and BIMCO have introduced a new online cyber security training programme for seafarers.
- Cyber Security at Sea is designed to help seafarers recognise and respond to cyber threats and other computer system breaches that could severely affect the safety of ships’ crew, systems and operations.
- The main topics in the programme cover the nature of cyber security threats, how to assess the risks to IT and operational technology, how to reduce the risks to individuals and ships, and how to respond to a cyber attack or breach.
- According to Mark Woodhead, KVH senior vice president, EMEA, cyber attacks can severely impact a vessel’s performance and are often triggered accidentally by seafarers opening phishing email attachments or using infected removable media.
